The leading Ukrainian tennis player has once again broken her personal and national records in the world classification. Thanks to her triumph at the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Premier 5 tournament in Toronto, Canada, Elina Svitolina has been able to climb another step in the WTA rankings as updated on Monday, August 14, and take the fourth position. For Svitolina just as for Ukrainian tennis in general, this marks a new personal record (in the WTA singles category), as well as equaling a record set by Andrii Medvediev, a former fourth-placed tennis player in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings. Medvediev took the fourth place in the men’s classification at the end of May 1994, aged 19, and held on to this position for three weeks.

In addition, Ukrainian tennis player Svitolina has become the first tennis player in the history of the WTA to take three consecutive titles in Premier 5 tournaments since the start of the season (the system was introduced in 2009). In the past eight seasons of the WTA Tour, no tennis player was able to win three titles of this category in a season, even non-consecutively. Two trophies per year at the Premier 5 series were won by Caroline Wozniacki (2010), Maria Sharapova (2011), Serena Williams (2013, 2014), and Victoria Azarenka (2013).

For Ukraine’s best tennis player Svitolina, this is the fifth international title to have been won this season (Taipei, Dubai, Istanbul, Rome, Toronto), so our athlete confidently leads the pack in the number of titles won this year. Incidentally, an exclusive interview with prominent Ukrainian tennis player Svitolina is to be published in the next issue of Den’s glossy supplement Route No. 1, which will focus on Kharkiv. Do not miss it!
