Without intrigue…

Yevhen ZAKHAROV: “I think Valeria Lutkovska will be elected”
29 March, 00:00

In all appearance, on April 24 Ukraine will get the new ombudsperson. In all probability it will be Valeria Lutkovska (governmental representative at the European Court for Human Rights). Overall 261 votes have been collected to support her candidacy. It looks like this time it will not fall flat.

“I think you known that the great work is being done and it will be the unique day when nearly all the MPs will be present in the Verkhovna Rada,” speaker of the parliament Volodymyr Lytvyn remarked.

We remind our readers that last time the human rights advocate Yevneh Zakharov received 134 votes and Valeria Lutkovska got 212 votes. To be elected the candidate needed to enlist the support of at least 226 MPs. It is known that Zakharov withdrew his candidacy saying that he is a stranger in this parliament.

“Once I spoke to a Pole and he told me that there is democracy in Ukraine since there is an intrigue who will win the presidential election. It is true that we still don’t know who will win. As for the ombudsperson, there is no intrigue. I think that Valeria Lutkovska will be elected. The members of the Party of Regions have already collected more than 226 signatures needed in her support. So, there will not be any surprises,” he admitted during the press conference at UNIAN.

According to him, the opposition is considering the new candidate for the post of ombudsperson – president of the International Women’s Rights Center La Strada-Ukraine Kateryna Levchenko. At the beginning of April it will be clear if she can pretend for this position when the collection of signatures is finished. However, theoretically, there can be only one candidate as it has already happened in our history.

Why did Lutkovska lack votes on March 15? There was a number of reasons. She was not supported by the communists and several members of the Party of Regions.

Let’s start with the communists. They did not vote since several former MPs from the Communist party were employed in Karpachova’s team. Everything is clear.

The situation with the MPs from the Party of Regions is a bit more complicated. Lutkovska was not supported by Vasyl Hrytsak’s group. The thing is that she is considered to be a person of Oleksandr Lavrynovych Hrytsak and Konovaliuk are fighting against because of biometric passports. Lutkovska was not supported by Eduard Pavlenko from the Party of Regions who is closely related to the current ombudswoman Nina Karpachova.

There is also a talk that Karpachova did her best to wreck the voting. However, it is unlikely to work again. The majority does not want to prolong her term saying that she has become narrow-minded.

However, the point is not only her “narrow-mindedness.” With all her flexibility Karpachova is not convenient for the authorities anymore. Because of the new reality Bankova Street needs another person – “the devil’s advocate.” We presume that Lutkovska will have to explain that Tymoshenko and Lutsenko’s imprisonment is fair saying that they have perfect conditions, their fridges are full of delicious food and the best medical equipment is at their service… Now it is just the case when we would like to be mistaken in our predictions.
