Time for debuts at YermilovCenter

Works by 45 authors represented in Kharkiv at “Nuremberg News Art Award 2017”
19 October, 10:39

At the opening one can see works by German authors who participated in the annual competition of “Nuremberg News Art Award 2017.” Over 25 years this competition has grown into an outstanding phenomenon for artists and connoisseurs of art. It defines and stimulates public discussion far beyond Northern Bavaria. It serves as a guiding light for artistic endeavors, a podium where artists can present their works; it initiates and reflects creative arguments.

According to the organizers, the special exposition “Nuremberg News Art Award 2017” presents works by 45 authors at the Center for Contemporary Art “YermilovCenter”: painting, objects, and installations. A large part of young participants have for the first time brought their works before the public, which proves the viability of the idea of Bruno Schnell, founder of the Art Award.

Nuremberg is the sister city of Kharkiv, so this event could be called an artistic mission from Germany. The exposition includes interesting works, for instance, by Sid Gastl (the first prize), which emphasize the sensation of the inevitable. They keep the viewer in a constant tension. Sculptor Ignaz Huber (the second prize) creates his collection of wonderful wooden images with astonishing ease and skillfulness. The works by Guenter Paule (the third prize) are not just paintings. They are sophisticated structures where forms turn into colored space, a lace of intricate patterns. Meanwhile, Jens Wohlrab (also the third prize) turns his canvases into tapestries of colors. In his world the power clearly belongs to color. The artist renders joy and vivacity, he whirls, and churns, and sparkles with sharp contrasts, but does not leave harmony outside.

The exhibit “Nuremberg News Art Award 2017” at YermilovCenter is a vivid example of cross-cultural dialog between two countries and cultural diplomacy in action. The organizers maintain that art keeps changing us and the world around us, it lets us understand one another better and get acquainted with the variegated colors of the present-day world.

The exhibit is open through November 6.

The Day’s FACT FILE

Nuremberg News Art Award is a competition held for 25 years already in Germany. It was established by Nuremberg Press, a publishing house, and one of the major papers in the middle Bavarian region, the Nuremberg News, to support authors and stimulate interest in contemporary art.

In 2017 there are three key awards: first prize (8,500 euro), second prize (5,500 euro), third prize (3,000 euro), and a number of other awards of 2,000 euro each.

Besides, there is the Special 8,500 euro Prize from the Publisher of Nuremberg News. It is a personal prize awarded independently of the jury and established by the publisher and editor-in-chief of the Nuremberg News, Bruno Schnell.

Nuremberg News Art Award has been awarded annually since 1993. The awards are summed up, taking this year’s prizes. Up till now the total sum exceeds 750,000 euro.

Nuremberg News Art Award aspires to promote the artists born in Franconia (and the borderline districts of the Upper Palatinate), or who are currently living and working there.

Nuremberg News Art Award emphasizes the tight bond between the publishing house Nuremberg Press and the contemporary artistic life of Northern Bavaria. Sponsoring art and artists, which has for decades been declared both in versatile and continual philanthropism, has been a special activity for Schnell’s publishing house, as well for his family and the Nuremberg News.

The exhibit is supported by the municipality of Nuremberg and the House of Nuremberg in Kharkiv.
