Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty

Lining up for Happiness

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

My mother and I are standing in line for sugar. Yesterday, we lined up
for buckwheat and the other day, for flour. Who invented those lines? Can't
we do without them? Mama says we have not had such lines for quite a while.
Now we do. How boring they are! And so long, so dull. You can stand in
line quite a long only to learn that the sugar has run out. Then I will
be unable to sweeten my tea. Mother is becoming angry, but I hide my joy:
the money was not spent and it would be just enough to buy a toy - a small
automobile. I have dreamed a long time about it. They sell it in a department
store opposite our house. I came there three times to see it. But Mother
says sugar is more important. Sugar is food, an essential item. But I'm
ready to drink my tea without sugar for a whole week, if only mama buys
me that toy. The chance is low though. She gets angry when I begin to talk
about toys.

Now, when will our turn finally come? I cannot wait when we go home.
On the way, I will try to persuade mama to duck into our department store.
Maybe she is feeling more generous today.
