Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty

New Books Are to be Found Not Only at Petrivka

23 March, 1999 - 00:00

By Diana KLOCHKO, The Day
Access to information about new books will soon be virtually unlimited.
While today, if you want to know at least something about them, you have
to turn to the Book Chamber of Ukraine, paying for all kinds of services,
very soon each of us will be able to get complete information free of charge
and quickly.

The International Renaissance Foundation has held a public defense of
three projects as part of a contest to set up an independent non-governmental
distributor network embracing the whole Ukraine. $100,000 have been allocated
for the system that will allow us to know the titles, circulation, and
places of publication for new books, as well as to get in touch, via library
servers and web-sites, directly with publishers interested in the fast
sale of their literature. Probably in the nearest future, two or three
years from now, when this system begins to work and pay off, there will
also exist "virtual shops," where readers will be able to order the literature
they need from all over the world. The current stage in the making of this
system also aims to form a Books in Print catalogue which will present
all Ukraine's new literature as early as this year.
