04 June, 00:00

Kyiv’s Museum of One Street (also known as the Andriyivsky Uzviz Museum) for the first time represented Ukraine at the contest Europe’s Best City Museum, vying with well-known big museums, such as the National Portrait Gallery of London, Basel Museum of Music, City Museum of Helsinki, Aleksandr Pushkin Home-Museum of St. Petersburg, and the Viking Museum of Norway.

This year’s contest involved 62 museums from 23 countries and the awards ceremony took place in Luxembourg this May, attended by Belgian Queen Fabiola and the Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg. The contestants had to show the best presentation and interpretation of their collections, create a unique atmosphere, demonstrate most effective management and popularity with visitors. The annual contest is organized by the non-governmental European Museum Forum, thus to promote progressive museum business trends and international integration in the cultural domain.

The One-Street Museum was founded in 1901 by Master, a volunteer creative organization. Its collection boasts over 5,000 articles constituting a solid harmonious whole, illustrating the history of just one street, Andriyivsky uzviz, and its inhabitants at various historical periods. This museum allows for no ideological preferences and presents an extensive historical picture of the city district, city, and the rest of Ukraine. Its expositions illustrate social, psychological, economic, and political aspects of the historical process.
