Cozy Exhibition

02 April, 00:00

David Sharashidze’s one man show recently opened in the hall at the Actors’ House seems a harmonic part of Kyiv background: no radical perturbations and at the same time rather elegant.

It is a pleasure to look at such paintings during a Sunday walk. Everything is very simple and contains a clear set of symbols: mostly pomegranates, flowers, a blue chair, a red armchair, portraits of pensive long-necked persons, streets and sites of an old city, easily recognized as Tbilisi. Vivid, clear local colors on large plane surfaces, domination of red and blue colors. In general, the effect is very comfortable, what they call salon art. In fact, the salon is an important and integral part of actual art processes, and replacing it with a ubiquitous and aggressive gallery hardly made any good to those processes. Sharashidze supports precisely this salon component easily and persuasively. There is no need for verbose and confusing author’s commentary, manifests as such, or curators and critics’ ritual dance. The works are open to any view, and the exhibition is permeated with a kind of mental comfort. Nobody provoke you here, which is already something, believes Dmytro DESIATERYK, The Day.
