Dance Fireworks At Artek

3 July, 1999 - 00:00

The International Children's Center ARTEK is Crimen has for the past two years been the mid- summer venue of choreographic contests. Not so long ago it hosted the 2nd Yuri Grigorovich Fouette International Youth Classical Dance Contest. Quite recently, it accommodated a new event, the Artek Breeze All-Ukraine Sports Ballroom Dance Contest.

Fouette gathered over 100 contenders from Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, Latvia, Germany, Austria, and Israel. Summing up the results, head of the jury Yuri Grigorovich addressed the performers and viewers: ТI have been fortunate enough to act as an originator and head of jury at a number of international ballet contests, yet I consider this occasion a very special one. This contest, held on the shore of the sea, under starlit skies, was watched by thousands of Artek vacationers every night, and for most it was the first opportunity to encounter the big art of classical ballet and modern dance. The young contenders showed a remarkably high professional level. Most had very good technique and were obviously knowledgeable of the classical heritage and modern innovations. This is particularly true of dancers representing the Ukrainian ballet schools in Donetsk, Odesa, Lviv, and Kharkiv — above all those from the Kyianochka Special Dance Lyceum and Ukrainian Dance Academy, namely Natalka Domrachova (Grand Prix), Viktor Ishchuk, Khrystyna Shypiur, and Hanna Yanchuk (gold medals). This contest has a big future.У

At present, young sports ballet dancers are vying at Artek, among them Ukrainian and European champions. The contest is supervised by the Ukrainian Dance Academy's leading instructors Valentyna Fedorchuk and Sviatoslav Vlokh.
