In late October director of Terebovlia Museum of Local Studies Ihor Zinchyshyn and members of the Young Archeologist Study Group were in a field gathering pottery shards pertaining to the Trypillian culture. This was near a village of Zelenche, a short distance from Terebovlia, Ternopil oblast. Suddenly one of the children found an ancient coin, and when they gave a closer look, they found several more. Next day the group, assisted by senior staff scientist of the Ternopil Oblast Museum of Local Studies Oleksandr Boiko, found as many as sixty coins in various points excavated.
According to Oleksandr Boiko, the Zelenche treasure is from medieval times. Most of the coins are silver half grosz coins of Polish Kings Kazimierz IV (1446-1492) and Jan Olbracht (1492-1501). There were also dinars of Wladyslaw Warnenczicz (1434-1444) and Jan Olbracht. The coins were transferred to the Ternopil Museum, where they are being catalogued and examined by experts. One coin in the discovered collection turned out to be counterfeit, which can also be considered a rarity. Boiko said that according to the archives, the minting of half grosz at that time was centered in hamlets near Przemysl, reports our correspondent Oleksandr VILCHYNSKY.
