Friends of the National Art Museum Find New Friends

12 May, 00:00
By Diana KLOCHKO, The Day The first of the three events, planned by the newly-established Friends of the National Art Museum of Ukraine Foundation has taken place. In spite of a rather ironic subtext - the function was held at the Ukrainian Government House of Receptions, which has so far given no tangible material support to the museum on the eve of its centenary - the reception did not turn into some sort of Fronde. It can without exaggeration be described as an elegant club party. A charitable contribution in the form of a brief concert was made by Yuri Shepeta's jazz band, one of Kyiv's best. Well-known music scholar Oleksiy Kohan noted in a short speech that there is a certain relationship between jazz, often called the classical music of the twentieth century and Ukrainian fine arts.

English and Ukrainian were spoken at the soiree, which also underlined the event's carefully prepared and perhaps previously forecast importance. Most of those who came were foreign nationals residing in Ukraine's capital. By coming to the affair, they responded to the foundation's appeal to raise funds to renovate the entrance to the National Art Museum. But Ukrainians also did not stay on the sidelines: as Iryna Stetsura noted in an interview with The Day, some of our compatriots, enchanted by the reception, promised to bring their friends to subsequent functions to be held at the National Art Museum itself.
