“People go to Frankfurt because everybody does” is the motto of the world’s most important book fair which this year celebrates its fiftieth anniversary. But those who cannot afford going to Frankfurt are invited to visit the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy Art Gallery where an exhibition of German Pages representing 2200 books of 315 publishers has opened.

The Ukrainian tour of the Frankfurt Book Fair started in Lviv at a forum of publishers. Now Kyivans also have a possibility to explore a small piece of the civilized book world, which helps us understand how far is Ukraine from it because of its unthinking publishing policy.

However, German Pages is not so much a variety of books as a variety of culture actions scheduled and organized by the Goethe Institute: the Jews in Ukraine photo exposition by Rita Ostrovska opened at the Artist’s House, Berthold Brecht in Photographs exhibition, a concert of music by Kurt Weil, a festival representing film versions of German novels, and a personal presentation at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy of Uve Timm’s new novel, Ivan’s Night.
