Ground Broken for New Greek Catholic Church in Kyiv

25 May, 1999 - 00:00

By Klara GUDZYK, The Day

Last Sunday, on the day of St. Feodosy of the Caves, the ceremony of laying
and consecrating the cornerstone of St. Basil's Church took place in central
Kyiv. It will be the first Greek Catholic church in the Ukrainian capital.
Addressing those present - the faithful, clergy, monks, and administration
officials - Bishop Vasyl of Kyiv and Vyshhorod, said, "When this church
is built and consecrated its doors will open for all, it will become the
property of the Kyivans; each and every person will be able to come here
to pray." The cornerstone was brought from the medieval Krekhiv Monastery.
The new church was designed by Larysa Skoryk, a noted Kyiv architect, and
is being built on a scenic slope on Smirnov-Lastochkin Street. It will
be a quite sizable structure accommodating several hundred worshipers.
Construction will be done by Brama Ltd., and Mykola Storozhenko, a reputed
master of modern Ukrainian religious decoration, has been commissioned
to do the decoration. According to Oleksandr Somyk, Brama manager, the
church will harmoniously blend in with the urban landscape bordering on
Lviv Square, reports The Day's Klara GUDZYK.
