Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty

Hay Sculptures

Silver Bells Gallery hosts Svitlana Kubrak’s solo exhibit
28 December, 2004 - 00:00
ONE OF HER WORKS

This artist uses hay in a very unusual way, as sculptural material. Her labor-intensive creative process culminates in a brightly colored character that is often dressed up: a hedgehog reading a book and wearing a pair of comfortable slippers, a frog sporting a bikini, a piglet in a tutu and spangled ballet shoes. Of course, Svitlana Kubrak also creates absolutely realistic sculptures of pets that stand, sit, or lie in all possible poses. She uses hay to make flowers, vegetables, and fruits, shoes — even watering cans. This exhibit boasts a collection of garments complete with hangers (also made of hay, of course) with animals — a dachshund, a romantic-looking mouse, teddy bears — peeking out of every pocket.
