How will the Guinness Book of Records react?

17 September, 00:00

Fashion is no less a component of culture than, say, literature or painting. Being stylish in Ukrainian way is not so easy in our days. We have too little trademarks entirely answering Ukrainians’ needs and taste. Ukrainian costume is renowned in the world owing to our couturier Mykhayil Voronin, who, incidentally, is concerned about not only his own business’s prosperity but domestic goods gaining popularity and prestige abroad.

Last Sunday a show took place in Khreshchatyk organized by the couturier together with the Zhelan Garment Factory. The happening consisted of three parts: sewing the record dinner jacket, showing all kinds of costumes Zhelan factory (previously named for Maksim Gorky) issued in its seventy years’ history, and a concert by Ukrainian pop stars.

First the audience on Khreshchatyk was demonstrated a gigantic hanger made of rings, and then a patriotic blue-and-yellow dinner jacket was hoisted on it in a ceremonial atmosphere. The process of creating the biggest dinner jacket in the world (almost 10 meter high) was completed by Mr. Voronin himself, who sewed huge 35-cm buttons to it.

The festival lasted for three hours, and each of its parts was unique in its own way. Kyivans not only saw the birth of a new Guinness record but became evident of Khreshchatyk turning into a catwalk. A concert with the participation of Tayisiya Povaliy, Ani Lorak, and the Golden Goose Club crowned the holiday night. The public was satisfied, and so was the couturier for whom, in his words, working for Ukraine’s image is of first rate. The show was directed by People’s Artist of Ukraine Oleksiy Kuzhelny who, suffice it to recall, had a similar experience with staging a show in Kyiv’s main street on New Year 2000.
