Lviv to be book capital of the world

On the eve of the XVII Forum of Publishers the famous Kyivan writer-brothers Kapranov turned to the Lviv community, regional and local authorities with an open letter. They called for nominating Lviv as a candidate for the book capital of the world, as it is the incontestable book capital of Ukraine. The letter says, “What is the magnet that has been attracting writers and journalists to Lviv for 17 years?.. It is the Lviv citizens… The Forum initiators and organizers, headed by Oleksandra Koval and including ordinary Lviv citizens, have been turning the Forum into a unique event for 17 years now, as they are faithful to books.” The brothers Kapranov emphasized that UNESCO’s main criterion for selecting the book capital is the program offered by the candidate. “Seventeen years of experience in holding the Forum and the ability to unite the creative and constructive forces of Ukraine shows that Lviv is ready for such an event,” the Kyivan writers are convinced. They even set a deadline — 2014. The solemn transfer of the letter took place in the reception room of Andrii Sadovy, the mayor of Lviv. He promised to make every effort in order to fulfill the proposition. Let us remind that the Forum of Publishers took place in Lviv on September 16-19. About 400 events were scheduled, and guests from 24 countries were expected.
