On August 19 the Eastern Churches observe the holiday of the Transfiguration of Our Lord. Jesus Christ began to preach the Gospel of Our Lord so simply, as merely the son of an unknown carpenter. But on the Day of the Transfiguration, his Disciples witnessed his Godly essence, as he stepped forth among them in the force and glory of the Son of God. This happened when he was 29 on Mount Tabor in Palestine.
Today we are also witness to numerous human transfigurations, mainly negative ones. Before our eyes some hitherto inveterate enemies of property have been transformed into sharks of capitalism, noble bearers of the national idea into chauvinists, and democrats have been transfigured into prophets of dictatorship. Let us recall some of our Orthodox fathers who provide a world of examples of hostility to those close to them. And somehow we lose our very “modest carpenter’s son” in the strength, honesty, and capability everyone supposedly believes in.
