Polevy’s World

The Artists’ House hosted a one-man show by renowned Kyiv artist Hennady Polevy, dedicated to his 75th anniversary. Sometimes it seems that this artist depicts not the real Earth, but some other planet, so unexpected and blazingly beautiful. Of course, this is not so. His gift is in his ability to see familiar things anew and, more importantly, show them to others. The solemnity of the Kara-Dag mountain (perhaps the artist’s favorite motif) appears equal in value to the terrific fairy-tale trunks of old pussy willows or the refined umbrellas of herbs looking huge and majestic. Polevy’s unique perspective looks through them upwards to the starry sky. However, boundless landscapes are not the only images that give cause for admiration and delight in Polevy’s work. It can be an ordinary honeycomb painted as a true treasure or four red apples. A sunflower, a certain emblem or symbol of Hennady Polevy, became the central figure of a whole series of his works, where there is everything: history and philosophy, passionate admiration of the beauty of the world, and no less passionate indignation against the danger constantly threatening it.
