Fashion Seasons is a fashion show of clothes from Ukraine’s hottest designers. The structure and tasks of the event are similar to those of the Ready to Wear Week. Organized and conducted by Yeva magazine, the Yanko Agency, and Serhiy Byzov fashion house with financial assistance from the Absolut Co., Fashion Seasons has become the lodestar for those who follow closely the world of fashion.
The short pants were a prominent feature in almost all the collections displayed. The designers seemed to command rather than recommend: Dear ladies, if you want to be fashionable this summer, wear britches.
The faultless lines of waisted garments which took the viewer back to the crazy 1980s. Like lightning, they flashed through a collection shown by the Eksta Fashion Center. They could be seen in the elegant clothes made by Viktoriya Hres. In comparison to these collections, the designs by Tamara Bochur were very avant-garde. Unspoiled by the 1990s, she showed more wisdom than other show participants: she simply remained true to herself, waiting patiently when the time would be ripe for her ideas.
Let’s congratulate ourselves on Ukraine’s becoming a truly European nation. Anyway, what else but a sheer boredom with the wonders of the Western civilization could explain its irresistible longing for the Orient. The general impression was that the Serhiy Byzov Fashion House was the most successful in recreating its exotic style. A weakness for things Oriental was evident in hairdos, makeup, and exquisite fabrics. To enhance the impression, Rusha Poliakova showed her collection to the tunes of a mysterious Japanese flute.
A few attempts were made by designers to demonstrate that they had begun to be more sensitive about minorities, both social and sexual. Fashion designer Olesia Savenko of the Cherkasy Garment Factory presented a collection of the hottest youth clothes made in the ready-to-wear style. Designers like Oleksiy Zalevsky know that real people require less from fashion. They want their clothes to make them look good, and they want to be comfortable wearing them. Zalevsky’s latest collection proved that he remains true to his principles. His designs are attractive and fashionable with a crazy charm. Olena Vorozhbyt and Tetiana Zemskova showed their collection of garments for large women. To model such a collection was not easy. It took quite an effort to find a woman who would not be ashamed of coming onto the catwalk and showing her size. Famous television weather girl, Ruslana Pysanka appeared to be the only brave woman in the whole of Ukraine who agreed to serve as a model of the large-size clothes at the show.
Fashion Seasons proved that top sartorial quality and practicality are not mutually exclusive. Until recently, few fashion designers dared to advocate this trend. But the Mykhailo Voronin-Vienna-Paris Fashion House was one. Incidentally, it also showed a wonderful collection this time. Now more and more designers profess to care not only about fashion people but about the rest of the population as well. In any event, most of the clothes shown at the Fashion Seasons could go straight to shops. The creation of beautiful practical clothes are no longer considered by fashion designers their “private business.” At last they have started thinking about the buyer. Comparisons of domestic and foreign fashions have long been problematical, but our designers are catching up. It is interesting where Ukrainian fashion could lead.
