A book publishing forum opening in Lviv last Friday could be called a culminating event of the publishing year. Apart from displaying new books and making contracts, the event was marked by serious economic and literary discussions. By tradition, special prizes are conferred on the Ukrainian books of the year, in recognition of their typography, design, and contents. Naturally, Ukraine’s leading publishing houses and companies submitted their best products. This year they are competing with numerous foreign counterparts. Among almost 200 participants in the forum are publishing companies from Poland, Slovakia, Russia, and Belarus. Naturally, all are eager to explore a display from the Frankfurt book fair with over 2,000 titles from 315 German publishers. The Ukrainian exposition is also worth seeing, including the forum’s small sensation, a collection of hitherto unknown works by Ivan Franko and Pleroma’s modern encyclopedia of Ukrainian literature.
