VACATIONS FOLLOWED BY A HOLIDAY

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

The young actors of Lviv’s Les Kurbas Youth Theater toured the United States for two months with Hryhory Skovoroda’s Grateful Erodiy and Bohdan-Ihor Antonych, holding joint rehearsals at the largest US universities’ drama schools (e.g., Yale, Michigan, and Columbia). Volodymyr Kuchynsky’s troupe with their secluded laboratory search, did not expect any extraordinary returns from the trip (this drama company is anything but prosperous financially in Ukraine). To them, the tour overseas was rather a vacation. However, being a hard-working lot, despite being constantly on the go (over twenty performances in two months, covering some 20,000 km), the company went on with planned rehearsals of its own and even showed a tentative production of Lesia Ukrainka’s “The Stone Host”. Aware of the biased tastes of domestic audiences, the Les Kurbas group is not likely to perform it in Ukraine any time before September, the more so that they are currently busy preparing festival called Theater: Method and Practice. scheduled for May 9-17 in Lviv and dedicated to what is described as “singing in dramatic rendition.” The festival is expected to attract guests from Austria, Sweden, Ireland, Georgia, and Latvia.
