Philologist Vira Sulyma's study of Biblical allusions in Ukrainian
literary works from the eleventh century to our day is the basis for the
new textbook, Bibliya i ukraiinska literatura (The Bible and Ukrainian
Literature; Osvita Publishers, Kyiv, 1998). It traces the history of the
Scriptures' perception and acceptance by Old Rus' authors and its impact
on the philosophies of Hryhory Skovoroda, Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko,
and Lesia Ukrayinka, says journalist Hanna LOBANOVSKA. Separate chapters
are dedicated to Biblical texts retold by Panteleimon Kulish and Ivan Puliui.
The chapter, " Twentieth Century Biblical Poetry" contains an anthology
of allusions to stories and characters in the Old and New Testaments by
Ukrainian poets Pavlo Tychyna, Bohdan-Ihor Antonych, Yevhen Malaniuk, Yuri
Klen, Todos Osmachka, Hrytsko Chuprynka, Mykola Zerov, et al. Of
special interest are Lina Kostenko's paraphrases of the Psalms in which,
according to the book's author, "the ancient tradition of healing degeneration
of the spirit and infirmity of the soul with Biblical fire is revived."
