Kyiv's Art-East Gallery displays Mykhailo and Tetiana Karlovsky's works
Real Angel and Unreal Angel - even an experienced art gallery
visitor might not spot the difference between these outwardly similar sculptures
made by Mykhailo Karlovsky (something like a find-the-difference game).
A closer look, however, reveals delicate leather bands holding the angel's
wings. In fact, the entire exposition is aimed at piquing one's interest
in finding out where these wings grow from, glimpsing what is behind that
visible yet illusory boundary of life. While Mykhailo Karlovsky seeks the
boundary between the worlds of mortals and angels, his wife, Tetiana Skalko-Karlovsky,
submits lithographs with chimerical fish, people, and animals. Noah's
Ark is the title of a series that first makes one aware of today's
almost infernal chaos. But perhaps the reason is that we find today's life
so hard and feel so lonely is that we are really locked in a huge box,
with "two of every creature under the sun" and almost no hope to find one's
like? The Ukrainian artists live and work - quite effectively - in Germany
and the Art East exposition is a very special occasion, marking their creative
debut in Ukraine.
