1+1 Television Threatened

20 July, 1999 - 00:00

The Day's editors have received a statement from the 1+1 television
channel saying that the channel's journalists are being threatened with
physical violence. "The source of these threats is an open secret for us,"
the statement affirms.

"Last October, when nine journalists and producers filed a protest against
interference in the channel's news policies, such threats were first heard
and were heard again from time to time. We now think these threats are
quite real. Despite this, we are going to stick to the most unbiased and
well-balanced positions in order to save the channel's creative face and
reputation," said Oleksandr Rodniansky, Volodymyr Oseledchyk, Mykola Veresen,
Olha Herasymiuk, Alla Mazur, Yuri Makarov, Vyacheslav Pikhovshek, Ihor
Slisarenko, Oles Tereshchenko, and Danylo Yanevsky.

Station management has so far refrained from comment.

Observers believe this statement is the continuation of a conflict that
broke out between channel management and a well-known businessman who is
now outside this country. The history of the conflict is rather mysterious.
In any case, the reaction of the respective services supposed to be in
charge of security is not known: the Security Service of Ukraine in fact
refused comment when the well-known businessman was being "deported." But,
as things stand, the story goes on and is taking a menacing turn.
