The number of those who died in Ukraine is 1.9 times the number of those born. In 1998 this ratio was 1.7, UNIAN reports quoting the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine. According to the committee, in 1999 the population of Ukraine dropped by 49,000. The most intensive population declines were in Chernihiv, Luhansk, Sumy, and Donetsk oblasts. As compared to January-November 1998, the number of newborns fell by 28,200 or 7.3% in the corresponding period of 1999.
