ALPHA COMMANDO MEN TO PROTECT EBRD BIG SHOTS

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

Oleh Taranov, Chairman of the EBRD Annual Convention Organizing Committee, told Interfax Ukraine that no scheduled arrivals had been officially canceled, as might have been expected due to Chornobyl or last week’s assassination of Ukrainian Association of Bankers President Vadym Hetman. The first guests are expected to arrive in Kyiv May 3 and about 2,500 other persons have confirmed their attendance (total participation is expected to reach some 5,000).

The EBRD forum is also to be attended by 74 government dignitaries. Their security arrangements are to be handled by Alpha commando experts under the Ukrainian State Security Service (SBU), reports Serhiy Zgurets, The Day.

BAD TIMES FOR THE STORK IN UKRAINE

Traditionally, a stork’s nest on the roof of a village home (or somewhere near an urban dwelling) has been considered a blessing meaning that the household would have peace and harmony, beget children and continue the line of generations. Now, it seems, the stork is bringing joy to no one. Young people are in no hurry to have children. They most often have to choose between career (and having enough at home) or having a family. Put differently, the choice is between being able to take a trip or putting up with nerves frayed by trouble and want, between a new car or a child. Very often young families prefer career, tourism, and an automobile.

Contemporary medicine also steps in. A variety of birth control programs and contraceptives, ranging from condoms to hormonal implants. And there is still abortion, of course. Incidentally, statistics show that there are two to three times more abortions than births in Ukraine. Man cleverly bypasses the laws of nature, but nature has its revenge. Experts predict that in the next decade every eighth married couple will be sterile. The stork will pass them by.
