Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty
Henry M. Robert

Anatoly Kazansky Dies

17 November, 1998 - 00:00

Yesterday our friend and colleague, caricaturist and artist Anatoly
Kazansky perished tragically. This number as always contains his sharp,
intelligent, and caustic sketches. Tolya was master of absolutely fantastic
powers of observation and striking acuity in perceiving life. He could
seem waggish, more honest than polite, and was in essence a tremendously
feeling and sensitive person. Life's injustices offended him personally
and deeply. Perhaps this utmost vulnerability also gave birth to his wonderful
and stunningly accurate graphic reactions to the idiocy of our lives and
the corruption of our ways. He was himself a person with a God-given talent
for living life to the fullest, be it in terms of friendship, love, and
in his work. His life being so tragically cut short denied him the capability
of accomplishing all of what his vast talent was capable. His death is
a gargantuan absurdity, equal to any he exposed with his gifted pen. It
is horrifying to us all to realize that the Tolya we saw so full of life
will no longer be among us.

We love you, Tolya. You will remain in our hearts forever.
