Awards for Newspaper Are an Incentive for Readers

11 November, 00:00

Den’/The Day newspaper has walked away with three awards from the First Professional Contest for the Ukrainian Print Media. The awards ceremony organized by the Ukrainian Periodicals Publishers Association took place the Saturday before last at the Kyiv Mohyla Academy National University. Over 1,000 works from 84 newspapers and magazines from across Ukraine were submitted for the contest. However, the jury decided not to name the winners in the categories for which few works were submitted. For example, this was the case with the Best Political Article (or Series of Articles) category among all- Ukrainian and Kyiv-based publications (regional ones were in a separate group). Nonetheless, Den’/The Day was distinguished in this category for a series of interviews with celebrated politicians. Our newspaper also became the contest’s laureate in the Best Report category (for all-Ukrainian and Kyiv-based publications) for Natalia Melnyk’s “Poor Birdie” and Oksana Omelchenko’s “Learning to Live” articles, and in the Best Economic Article category for Vyacheslav Darpiniants’s “Tanks Do Not Fear Mud.” Aside from the content, the jury also rated highly our newspaper’s design: in the Design and Newspaper Advertising section our newspaper won in the Best Newspaper Design category. Speaking at the awards ceremony, Ukrainian Periodicals Publishers Association President Mykhailo Weisberg said that journalists need not only financial but also moral incentives. We hope that Den’/The Day’s awards will become such moral incentives not only for our journalists, but above all for our readers as a proof that they have chosen the right newspaper. As for the contest itself, its organizers plan to hold it on regular basis in the future.
