Criminal investigation is underway in the explosion of two kilograms of
TNT at Kyiv's Sport Hotel on June 15. Whoever is behind it will, if apprehended,
be prosecuted under Article 89 of the Criminal Code (deliberate destruction
of or damage to public or collective property). The investigation is being
supervised by Ukraine's General Prosecutor Mykhailo Potebenko.

The explosion injured dozens of people who happened to be nearby and
the investigators believe that the whole affair has "business" roots. Most
likely the malefactor(s) tried thus to intimidate the firm's leasing offices
at the hotel. This version is supported by hotel manager Borys Voskresensky
who was summoned from vacation, although he refused to comment on any possible
connection with his being Vice President of Kyiv Dynamo Club when asked
by The Day.

General Mykhailo Vukov, head of the capital's Organized Crime Department,
told The Day that the explosion may have something to do with certain
people living in the hotel at the time. Experts established that the explosive
charge must have been of the plastic explosive variety, meaning compact
design and high demolition capacity. Because it costs so much it is used
in Ukraine only by the army and special police units, he added.
