Borys Paton Is 85

02 December, 00:00

Since Borys Yevhenovych Paton was elected president of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in 1962, he has never been replaced, being able not only to address managerial problems but also to generate new ideas for very interesting research projects. Moreover, Academician Paton also excels in sports: skates, tennis rackets, checkers, and even water skis submit to him without demur.

It is thanks to him that Ukrainian science has always been on the march, and teaching it to the young is no longer a matter of shame. The world’s first welding in outer space was also his experiment. The well-known Druzhba gas transit mainline is also his brainchild. He also contributed to the fact that during World War II the USSR produced more tanks than all the other warring countries combined. For, in collaboration with his famous father Yevhen Oskarovych Paton and other Institute of Electrical Welding associates, he devised a fundamentally new welding unit for the T-34 tank, which could replace eighty skilled workers. Among the milestones on his road are defense factories, research laboratories, the USSR Supreme Soviet, and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Mr. Paton is president of the International Association of Academies of Sciences; member of the European Academy, the International Astronautics Academy, and the Roman Club. His decorations include Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the highest awards of many foreign countries, the titles of Hero of Socialist Labor and Hero of Ukraine... Yet, this is not the limit.

The Day greets the celebrant and wishes him every success and boundless pleasures of life.
