Carpathian Village Students To Get American Stipends

27 April, 00:00
By Vasyl ZUBACH, The Day Californian Jordan August has established a foundation in honor of his father Ivan Ahoshtok, who was born in a mountain village Uhlia, Tiachiv district (Transcarpathia), in 1912. He went to the US at the age of 22. His last will seemed to foresee Ukraine's current hardships: his son is to establish a $1000 a year scholarship for each Uzhhorod University student from the village of Uhlia. Given the Uhlia residents' current dire straits, a monthly 280 hryvnias is indescribable happiness for five former villagers, now undergraduates in various departments and courses of the local university. The lucky five will receive the aforesaid amount in full before the end of this academic year. And at the beginning of the new academic year, another five residents of poverty-stricken Uhlia will be honored with financial aid from Western Diaspora.
