Chornobyl Veterans Brought Their Own BellsTo protect their privileges

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

On Tuesday over three hundred people representing a number of local organizations within the Chornobyl Union of Ukraine announced they were immediately picketing Parliament.

Viktor Danylenko, chairman of the Kyiv branch of the Chornobyl Union reported to The Day that those who suffered from Chornobyl are ready for everything in order to save the parliamentary Committee on Problems of the Chornobyl Catastrophe, keep their privileges, and prevent cuts in the Chornobyl Fund.

“If necessary, we will join the miners; we will stop traffic in downtown Kyiv streets,” he said. “If our state leaders refuse to talk to us in Parliament or Maidan Nezalezhnosty (Independence Square), we will go throughout Ukraine. We have nothing to lose, for we have lost our health.

If People’s Deputies refuse to listen to those who elected them, people are likely rise up in all regions.”

Incidentally, there are 3.3 million people in Ukraine, who suffered from Chornobyl catastrophe, and the station itself needs about Hr 5 billion from the state budget.

According to People’s Deputy Volodymyr Yatsenko, during last five years 5 million people in Ukraine died prematurely. If this tendency continues, the country will simply die out.

On Tuesday, the Communists and Socialists asked strikers to fight against the threat of increased fees for communal services, telephone, gas, and energy.

To tell the truth, the real fight will be in Parliament, and Chornobyl victims will not have anything to do with it. But the Communists and Socialists will.
