Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty

CHRONICLES OF A WAR THAT NEVER HAPPENED

17 March, 1998 - 00:00

Arrest of the Dendi
president and cofounder
of the Kievskie Vedomosti newspaper, Mykhaylo Brodsky, now looks more like a political reprisal.
No matter how long the authorities waited,
the actual basis for this maneuver is obvious.

This is not the only case of this type. Think about scandal of Borys Palivoda or the Blasco concern, where Leonid Kravchuk was named as a codefendant. And how did it all end up? In late 1997 the Supreme Military Court of Ukraine fount the former chief of presidential security not guilty and set Palivoda free. But the trial played its role.

The court has been proceeding the case on Blasco Co. for a year already and there are no signs of it ending anytime soon.
New methods of combating corruption have been perfectly mastered by the authorities: accusation of corruption and other illegal actions, destroying the target's business and pressure through the mass media. When the person finally proves his innocence, his political train will be long gone.

Law enforcement officers announced bringing charges against Brodsky in July at the briefing at Internal Ministry. Ukrainian Supreme Court Chief Justice Vitaly Boyko said at the recent meeting with journalists: "Only a court can decide a person's innocence or guilt."

"Set Brodsky free" demanded people at the meetings the day after his arrest in front
of the State Prosecutor's Office and investigation cells.
