Consul General of US Embassy in Ukraine Killed In Automobile Crash

On November 9 at about 10 p.m., US Consul General in Ukraine Gregory Hulka and his ten-year-old daughter Abigail were killed in a fatal car accident in Vinnytsia oblast. Foreign Ministry Press Service Director Serhiy Borodenkov announced the sad news on November 13. According to him, Hulka and his daughter were traveling in a privately owned Fiat driven by a relative or acquaintance of the US Consul General. The US Embassy told UNIAN that Consul General Hulka was on his way to the wedding of a Ukrainian relative of his. The accident occurred after their Fiat swerved into the left lane and collided with a Mercedes-Benz minibus. None of the Fiat passengers survived. On Sunday, the bodies of the consul and his daughter were transferred to Kyiv to be flown to the USA. Gregory Paul Hulka was born October 31, 1957 in Inglewood, California of Ukrainian ancestry. He is survived by his wife and three children. The Haisyn district division of the Internal Affairs Ministry in Vinnytsia oblast has opened a criminal case under article 286, part 3, of the Criminal Code of Ukraine “Breaching the regulations of road traffic safety or exploitation of a vehicle resulting in human casualties.” Representatives of the US Embassy in Ukraine visited the site of the accident and questioned witnesses. At the request of embassy representatives and with the permission of the oblast prosecutor’s office the remains were delivered to the republic bureau of forensic examinations to establish the cause of death. The bodies were carried in US Embassy vehicles escorted by police and prosecutor’s office functionaries.
