Five years ago President Leonid Kuchma, taking an oath of allegiance to the Ukrainian people, presented them — i.e., us — with the course of his “reforms” which he called, for some reason, “market-oriented.” We — i.e., the people — cannot and do not want to be ungrateful to Mr. Kuchma (unlike him, by the way), so we present, in return, the current President with one for the road, the best gift there is. We are certain that we are not the only ones in the mood to do this: millions of Ukrainians have had the dubious pleasure of living through a solid five-year period of these “great reforms.” But, luckily, everything changes, and time goes on. So, not to let the President leave office empty-handed, let us, dear readers, present him with something else. Pursuing exclusively humane aims, The Day 's editors announces a contest: “What would you wish President Kuchma for the road?” Let us not allow our dear President leave office in dead silence! Let us wish him something for the road! The best wishes will be published. Please do not send us what cannot be printed.
