Criminal Case Brought on a Publication About the President

The Dnipropetrovsk regional prosecutor's office has brought a criminal case for aspersion and insult on a publication "The Crimean Race or a President's Portrait in Interior" in the newspaper, Dnieprovskaya pravda, of August 21.

The article gave an analysis of Leonid Kuchma's activity as Pivdenmash Plant Director and the President of Ukraine.

As Larysa Vyblaya, the Deputy Editor of Dnieprovskaya pravda told The Day that on August 31 she was called as a witness to visit the oblast prosecutor's office for interrogation, and on September 1 law enforcement officers came to the editorial office to confiscate the materials. Oleh Makarchuk, spokesman of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Prosecutor's Office confirmed that criminal charges were being filed.

During the last year the newspaper Dnieprovskaya pravda took a position close to that of the Hromada Party and its leader Pavlo Lazarenko.
