1847: Nicholas I of Russia orders Taras Shevchenko to be exiled as a private with the Russian military garrison in Orsk, a small fort near Orenburg, in the vicinity of the Ural Mountains, “under the strictest surveillance, without right to write or paint.”

1934: The Soviet Union establishes diplomatic relations with Romania and Czechoslovakia.

1990: The constituent convention of the Ukrainian Peasant Democratic Party takes place in Kyiv.

1993: The first volume of the 10-volume Encyclopedia of Ukraine (1955-84), re-printed on the initiative of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Lviv, is launched in Kyiv.

1995: The presidents of Ukraine and Russia sign an agreement on the special terms and conditions of the deployment of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and the Ukrainian Navy.

2006: World soccer championships start in Germany, with Ukraine’s national team, vying for the first time, making it to the quarter finals.
