1869: The settlement of Yuzovka is founded (in 1924-61 known as Stalino, then renamed Donetsk).

1919: Troops of the Ukrainian National Republic and the Ukrainian Galician Army force the Red Army to retreat from Kyiv and enter the city. In the evening troops of Denikin’s Volunteer Army force them to leave the city.

1944: The Council of People’s Commissars (Radnarkom) of the Ukrainian SSR adopts a decree on the creation of a documentary base relating to Ukrainian history and that of the “Great Patriotic War,” as well as on measures to put in order the archives of the Ukrainian SSR.

1961: The new heavy-duty open-hearth furnace starts producing steel at the Lenin Steelworks in Kryvy Rih.

1986: Passenger liner Admiral Nakhimov sinks at Novorossiysk [on the Black Sea] after colliding with a dry-cargo ship, killing a number of passengers and crew members.

1987: Kyiv is conferred the prestigious UN title “Messenger of Peace.”
