1804: Date of birth of Mykhailo Maksymovych, Ukrainian naturalist, historian, archaeologist, man of letters, the first rector of Kyiv University.

1893: Svoboda, the first Ukrainian language periodical in the US, is launched in Jersey City.

1922: Maria Zankovetska Theater opens in Kyiv (currently in Lviv, known as the Zankovetska State Academic Theater).

1941: OUN-Bandera members are arrested by the Nazis in the occupied territories of Ukraine and abroad.

1944: The Oriental and Occidental Art Museum is restored in Kyiv.

1991: St. Sophia Square in Kyiv hosts a popular assembly in support of the Declaration of Ukrainian National Independence.

1994: The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine cancels the Sevastopol City Council’s decision granting the city the status of that of the Russian Federation.

1995: Ukraine joins the Convention on Laundering, Search, Seizure and Confiscation of the Proceeds from Crime.
