1619: Yakub Havatovych’s two Ukrainian interludes are staged at Kamianka-Strumylova.

1855: The heroic defense of Sevastopol by Russian troops under the command of Vice Admirals Vladimir Kornilov and Pavel Nakhimov ends with Russia losing the Crimean War (1853-56).

1924: Alexandra M. Kollontai becomes the first Soviet female ambassador.

1941: The Wehrmacht 900-day siege of Leningrad begins.

1944: The First and Fourth Ukrainian Fronts launch the Eastern Carpathian offensive, clearing the western territories of Ukraine of the Wehrmacht.

1959: Dnipropetrovsk-Kryvyi-Rih gas pipeline is completed.

1989: Kyiv hosts the constituent assembly of the People’s Rukh, adopting the statute, action program, electing the leadership headed by Ivan Drach.
