Diplomats No Strangers to Charity

22 December, 1998 - 00:00

A Christmas charity concert was held in Ukraine's National Opera House
on December 14. It was organized by the International Diplomatic Club,
Ukrainian Association of Euro-Atlantic Cooperation, Ukrainian Committee
for the 1999 Hague Peace Appeal, and Continent Radio Station. The event
was carried out in advance to gather voluntary donations and gifts for
Transcarpathian children the holidays begin. Many diplomats are also going
home on Christmas vacation. The event was attended by businessmen, clerics,
embassy employees, and People's Deputies. Only top level state and Kyiv
City Administration officials failed to be present at the event, claiming
to have other important business. Oleksandr Omelchenko did not even send
his representative to accept the invitation to visit Orlando, Florida.
Such a lack of attention pained its good will messenger Dr. Jim Ponder
greatly. The concert's program consisted mainly of time-tested music: folk
songs, Christmas carols, Bach, Handel, and Schubert musical compositions
performed by the Kyiv symphony orchestra, Valentyna Stepova and jazz improvisations
by Men Sound, Jazz-Expromt and Taras Petrynenko's hits "God Save Ukraine"
and "Ukraine."
