DMITRY KHVOROSTOVSKY DID NOT FOOL MUSIC LOVERS

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

Yesterday in the Russian Embassy Russia’s Number one baritone, people’s artist Dmitry Khvorostovsky was awarded the Slavdom Prize, established by Ukraine’s International Academy of Ecology, for his tremendous contribution to the propagation of Slavic culture.

The concert by the outstanding “baritone from Siberia,” as Dmitry Khvorostovsky is referred to by Western mass media, in the national opera of Ukraine was without doubt the culmination of the Kyiv musical season. You could say this from concentration of VIPs and elite representatives in the hall. Apparently the President intended to drop in on the concert, which created certain problems for people, who had to go through numerous lines of security. In a way this cooled down the excitement from the meeting with Khvorostovsky. This also created an incredible line in front of the opera house and public servants were standing in line just like everyday people. When somebody inside realized that representatives of Ukrainian political Olympus were standing in line, they opened a special gate to let them through quicker, and the people around were not upset. Obviously, we will need some more time to master true democracy in relations between people and authorities.

Despite his touring as a soloist, Khvorostovsky demonstrates everywhere that he is closely tied to his Motherland, even though this country cannot secure a musician of his level with a corresponding level of comfort and competitive salary. Still, he always returns as a loving and devoted son and not as an egotistic conceited lucky man.

His generosity could teach us a lesson, for we are so accustomed to blaming our country and demanding from it, without thinking what can we return it.

After the concert I heard somebody say “He is handsome as everything that is.” We need to appreciate this beauty.
