Eduard Hurvits Banned From Odesa Mayoral Election

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

The new election of the Odesa city mayor will take place August 23 less former Mayor Eduard Hurvits. The city election committee refused to register him as a candidate by a vote of six to four with five abstentions.

City Election Committee Chairperson Ludmyla Budiak refused to comment on the reasons. One of the committee members, leader of the local office of the United Social Democratic Party Volodymyr Maksymovych told The Day: "Hurvits's candidacy was not registered because he and his election team violated the election law even before the March campaign, as was found by the Malynivsky District Court of Odesa and board of the Kirovohrad oblast court."

At the same time, the committee registered People's Deputy Oleksiy Kostusiev as a candidate for the mayor's post. Kostusiev was Hurvits' main opponent in March, but his registration was canceled at his personal request.

However, on June 6 the committee, chaired by Kapeliushny, considered Kostusiev's claim and changed the wording of the March 3 decision, On the Nullification of the Registration of a Candidate for the Mayorality.

Currently there are seven registered candidates to vie Kostusiev: Artsyz Mayor V. Chorny, Ukrpivdeninvestlitsenzia (Ukrainian Southern Investment Licensing), director K. Suruchan, Institute of Administration and Management director V. Nebabin, leader of Inkont public organization V. Driamov, Odesa railway station worker V. Bily. According to our information, leader of the Regional Renaissance Association Ruslan Bodelan and the chairman of Odesa branch of Ukrahrotekhservis (Ukrainian Agricultural Technical Service) M. Tiukhty will file for registration on July 6-7. The registration of the latter was also canceled in March at his own request. The members of the election committee will consider the candidates' documents on July7. Until now no one knows who will represent Hurvits' team in the campaign. The candidates have less than a week left for consultations and preparation.
