Elections in the Crimea should not have been blocked

17 February, 00:00
Verkhovna Rada has not been able to override the presidential veto of laws making possible elections in the Crimean Supreme Soviet. Pro-presidential forces in Parliament have successfully blocked Crimean elections. Deputy Serhiy Teriohin expresses his opinions on the causes and consequences of this at the request of The Day correspondent Tetiana Korobova:

"The position of the Ukrainian central power on elections in the Crimea and in Kyiv is the same: it would be advantageous if the authorities focus on the officials appointed by the President. Nevertheless there are losses. If there is no democracy, then people will want secession and to get away from the center by force.

"Another thing is also interesting. Just think, the Russian State Duma for the second time has tabled the question of even placing ratification of the so-called Great Treaty with Ukraine on the agenda. Not without reason in the Crimea separatist sentiments have again arisen, and not without reason. Huge sums of money flow from Moscow for residential construction in Sevastopol. You see, policy cannot be made in isolation; policy cannot be made clumsily; policy is an intelligent thing. And gradually in the Crimea the situation again being inflamed to its 1994 level, and it was not necessary to block elections in the Crimea simply to maintain the integrity of Ukraine.

"Some tough-talking pundits say that this is merely the latest present, the Russian Federation's pay-back for support in the forthcoming elections in Ukraine. That is, the creation of broader Crimean extraterritoriality. You know, Kuchma during the last half of the year after Oleksandr Razumkov appeared in the National Security and Defense Council has entirely changed his foreign policy direction and based his national security ideology on absolutely different principles. And one could even track his steps in buying Moscow beau-monde loyalty..."

By the way
Meanwhile Roman Bezsmertny, the president's permanent representative in Verkhovna Rada, told Tetiana Korobova: "I guarantee you, the elections in Crimea will take place on March 29."
