IS EVERYTHING ACCORDING TO PLAN?

By Dmytro SKRIABIN, The Day On June 30 the Central Election Commission (CEC) registered the first presidential candidates, incumbent President Leonid Kuchma and Communist Party of Ukraine leader Petro Symonenko, who have gathered the required number of signatures for nomination. The CEC has registered a total 19 contenders for presidential candidates, one of them (People's Deputy Ivan Bilas) having withdrawn his candidacy. It took the CEC 17 and 15 days to check out the signature sheets of Messrs. Kuchma and Symonenko respectively (Kuchma's representatives handed in the sheets on June 14, Symonenko's on June 16), Interfax-Ukraine reports.

According to the contenders themselves, over one million signatures have already been collected to support Yevhen Marchuk, Yuri Kostenko, and Oleksandr Moroz, The Day's Dmytro SKRIABIN reports. July 13 is the deadline for handing in the signature sheets. The law on presidential elections gives the contenders another ten days to correct mistakes and collect lacking signatures. The deadline for candidate registration has been set at August 2.
