Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty

Factions Multiply, But With Difficulty

22 December, 1998 - 00:00

Certain parliamentary sources report the imminent birth of a new faction,
For the Rebirth of the Regions, composed of the oil lobby that quit the
NDP and other big shots in vital sectors of the economy - e.g., Mr. Zviahilsky,
Ms. Antonieva (Artemida), Mr. Volkov, et al. The source alleging 36 names
on the faction's list turned out to be more enthusiastic than informed.
Some of the predicted members responded with the Verkhovna Rada's specific
brand of humor: "And who's going to pay? Those joining the faction or accepting
new members? What will cost more, joining or quitting?"

From what The Day's reporter could gather, the new faction, already
categorized as pro-Presidential, includes 14 persons. Considering that
time is pressing, chances are that the new faction (pro-Volkov would be
more like it) will officially register before long.

There is yet another faction in the offing, based on Reforms and Order.
Cloakroom scuttlebutt has it that Rukh is planning to delegate it some
of its people to make it numerically stronger and for better coordination
- in a word, to keep an eye on things.
