Fewer divorces in Ukraine

03 March, 00:00

In 2010 Ukraine registered its lowest number of divorces yet, reports the press service of the Ministry of Justice with reference to the department head Oleksandr Lavrynovych. 126,000 couples dissolved their marriages last year, almost 14 percent less than in 2009 and almost 25 percent less than in 2008. In addition, the ratio of marriages to divorces is now between two and four, depending on the region. More specifically, there were over 300,000 marriages registered in Ukraine in 2010, thus exceeding the number of registered divorces by almost 2.5 times. The best ratio of marriages to divorces is traditionally found in the Transcarpathian region. In 2010, there were four marriages for each divorce in the region. The Rivne, Volyn and Lviv regions were also particularly marriage-friendly, with 3.5 marriages for each divorce; Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk regions had three marriages for each divorce. In other regions there were two marriages for each divorce on average in 2010.
