Florists Prepare for 2K Christmas

16 November, 1999 - 00:00

A Ukraine-wide florist contest called Christmas- 2000 was organized and held by the R&D firm at the Roxolana commercial house. The contest, timed to coincide with the coming festivities on the occasion of the second millennium of Christ’s Nativity, culminated in an exhibition of the winners’ works. In addition, house head Ihor Dobrutsky introduced his new business partner to those who attended the awards ceremony.

The contest’s main idea was to revive the old family feasts of St. Nicholas, New Year, Christmas, Julian calendar New Year, and Epiphany, as well as to use the photos of works of Ukraine’s best florists in the making of specific New Year and Christmas greeting cards. The mottoes were fully in line with this spirit: Christmas Tree, Christ is born! Let us adore Him!, and New-Year gift. The first prize went to Liudmyla Tukalo (Kyiv, Roxolana), the second was shared by Vira Antipova (Kyiv, Khrystyna) and Natalia Matsavetska (Kyiv, independent author), with the third prize awarded to Andriy Lobodin (Lviv, The Smell of Dew) and Svitlana Kubrak (Kyiv, Silver Bells). All competition works will be sold as property of the organizing committee.

In spite of the few but doubtless strong conceptual points, the contest exposed many problems. In particular, the contest scale, smaller than the one before March, can be explained by lack of unity among our florists. In addition, the making of our national floral art is likely to take a long time, for even the legally recognized profession of florist does not yet exist in Ukraine. However, Mr. Dobrutsky’s new partner Mykola Bloshko expressed confidence not only in the success of joint efforts but also in the promising future of this art here.
