Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty
Henry M. Robert

Freethinkers Meet

12 October, 1999 - 00:00

Lviv University is not an amorphous and phlegmatic abstraction,
where everybody wears their hair the same way and everything is painted
the same color. It is not a prison or military school, where they can ask
one and all to become equal, and they will pay attention. Here, everything
real, sincere, and true is felt at the level of one's cells. And this is
exactly how they live and study. The students are not mere generic students,
but dignified, proud, and critically thinking Ukrainians. Against the general
student backdrop, Lviv University is a bulwark of free thought. This is
what makes the city of Lviv and Lviv students interesting. The place has
a magnetism. You will not see forced, doll-like smiles here. If they smile
at you, they are really glad to see you. If they hold you over two hours,
it means that you are really interesting. Here, they will tell you the
truth, without prettying it up with verbiage, without fear or juggling
with facts. If you want to know the truth, listen. If you want flattery
— excuse us, you are dull, boring, and goodbye. Thus, one comes here for
the truth and thoughtful criticism. And if they wait for you and welcome
you, what you say must have the ring of truth.

At the Journalism Department of Lviv Franko State University,
The
Day (represented by Editor-in- Chief Larysa Ivshyna) was awaited, welcomed,
and listened to for over two hours. There were dozens of direct sharp questions.
And dozens of honest specific answers. Thanks for the interaction.
