Outstanding international financier and philanthropist George Soros said
last Wednesday at a roundtable in the Kyiv National University, that Ukraine
"is falling economically." Answering students' questions, he also said
he would not have a single senior state official he met in Kyiv in charge
of one of his funds. Even the opposition should take no comfort from such
words, for his characterization of the situation, to which Ukraine has
been brought by its current leadership was absolutely murderous.
The current world crisis was brought on by exaggerated faith in market
mechanisms and so-called market fundamentalism. Soros suggested creation
of a global observation system to prevent crises. However, he recommends
Ukraine not to reinforce regulation, because he does not see either a market
economy or open society here. He views our economy as completely monopolized
by government and corrupt officials. In addition, Ukraine, like Russia,
lacks both a "well-functioning government" and political leadership.
