Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty

GOVERNMENT TO FIGHT THE SHADOW ECONOMY WITH INADEQUATE MEASURES They have gone on the warpath but where will it take them?

13 November, 2012 - 00:00

The Prime Minister initiated forming a special commission to develop measures to liquidate of shadow economy (according to experts, it makes up as much as 60% of GDP). Pustovoitenko specifically underlined that the list of people constituting the commission will not be made public and he will be the only one to know their names. According to him, this is caused by the fact that they will develop "inadequate measures" to fight the shadows. Since the commission is about inadequate measures, the government apparently refuses to fight it with adequate measures (by legalizing it, for instance). And we can only guess what the "inadequate measures" will be like.

It is hard to even imagine what they might be. They can invite shadow representatives to the Ukraine Palace to celebrate the Independence Day, lock the bathrooms, and keep them there until they give up all their unofficial profits. And there will be a military parade around the palace so that all stay inside and flee. But the most inadequate measure is to continue introducing the present economic program. The last 30% of economy will definitely go into the shadow then. Afterwards there will be no shadow, because legal economy will disappear and there will be nothing to cast a shadow.

Incredible secrecy around the group's roster will give a new kick to those who claim some top level officials represent forces that actually control the shadow sector and therefore are not interested in legalizing it. God give them control over only the shadow economy and not the government. Otherwise, Pustovoitenko will have to fight Mafia alone, like Serpico in the NYPD.
